About The School

About the school...........

Fannie L. Mullins School, located at 711 Martin Luther King Drive in Brookhaven, holds a significant place in the community’s educational history, closely linked to the legacy of Alexander High School. Initially, African-American students from grades 1 through 12 attended the Alexander Campus. In 1954, Fannie L. Mullins School was established as an elementary institution to accommodate younger students and help alleviate overcrowding at Alexander.

The school is named in honor of Mrs. Fannie Locwood Tate Mullins, known as “Miss Fannie,” a pioneering educator and esteemed community leader. Born in Ohio in 1869, Mrs. Mullins moved to Brookhaven in 1907 to pursue a career in teaching. Beyond her commitment to education, she was recognized for her courage and civic engagement, notably for successfully registering to vote in Mississippi during a period of widespread voter suppression. Mrs. Mullins taught for over 40 years, retiring in 1949 at the age of 80, and was widely regarded as a leading educator within the Brookhaven Colored School District.

Originally serving students in grades 1 through 6 during the era of segregation, Fannie L. Mullins School played a vital role in the local education system. Following desegregation, the school transitioned to serve students in 4th and 5th grades. Today, it operates as the Alternative Center for students across various grade levels within the Brookhaven School District. The facility also houses several district offices, including:

  • 16th Section Land
  • Adolescent Opportunity Program
  • School Attendance
  • Brookhaven High School GED Option Program
  • Food and Nutrition Department
  • Maintenance Department
  • Special Services
  • Technology Department

Although Mrs. Mullins passed away in 1958, her legacy of dedication, resilience, and commitment to education continues to inspire all who engage with Fannie L. Mullins School. The institution stands as a lasting tribute to her impactful contributions and the ongoing advancement of education within the Brookhaven community.
